I am a sucker for kids devotional books. I love them. I have a growing colleciton even thought my own children are quickly growing up and aging out. Recently, we were given Roar Like a Lion: 90 Days to a Courageous Faith by Levi Lusko to review for the Homeschool Review Crew. Levi Lusko is the founder and lead pastor of Fresh Life Church. He is the bestselling author of Through the Eyes of a Lion, Swipe Right, and I Declare War. This father of five travels around the world speaking about Jesus. Roar Like a Lion: 90 Days to a Courageous Faith is his first book geared towards children.
In addition to working in youth ministry, I also teach upper elementary age kids through our homeschool co op. My heart breaks often at the messages our children are receiving from the world. It is a mess… I don’t know how else to explain it. It is messy and confusing. I worry about this generation of kids. But then I remember that God is so big and so sovereign and these children were created and brought into the world for such a time as this. These kids of ours need a boost of courage filtered through a Biblical worldview as they walk through life.
Roar Like a Lion: 90 Devotions to a Courageous Faith devotional for children, ages 6-10, covers highly relevant topics such as:
- Facing fears about school and friendships
- Dealing with peer pressure and bullying
- Handling new challenges, disappointments, and grief
- Having courage to try something new
- Understanding how we each fit into God’s great story
The beautifully illustrated devotional book is hardback and has 192 pages. It is published by Tommy Nelson, an Imprint of Thomas Nelson. I love the way the book is put together. Each devotion is a two page spread and contains a Bible verse, devotional, prayer, and a “Get Ready to Roar” note encouraging children to respond to what they have just read. In addition to Scripture, Lusko uses real-life examples from figures of history like Harriet Tubman and the Wright Brothers who have made a huge impact on today’s world.
Roar LIke a Lion devotional for children contains ninety beautifully illustrated devotions. Each devotion contains a Bible verse. Several different Bible translations are used including the New International Version (NIV), The International Children’s Bible (ICB), The English Standard Version (ESV), and the New Century Version (NCV).
What messages are your children receiving? It can be overwhelming to try to navigate through all the mess of our current culture. It can be easy to be swept up in the propaganda and agendas that seem to fill every book, song, show, movie. Rather than focusing on the agenda out in the world, I would encourage you to spend your focus and energy on getting into Scripture…. getting your kids into Scripture. Roar Like A Lion by Levi Lusko is an excellent resource for pointing your child to the Lord and teaching them to dig into scripture. The devotional helps kids understand that the Bible really does address such issues as fear, peer pressure, loss, and knowing our purpose in life.
