Y’all. I’m not going to lie. This mama is weary. This world is dragging me down and I just feel the heaviness of it all the time. I try to focus on my circle… my family, my students at youth group, the co op where my kids take classes and I teach. These are the circles in which I move. I try to just focus on what is happening in my circle and not let the heaviness become overwhelming… but this world is hard and scary. The media seems untrustworthy. The propaganda is everywhere. Knowing who to trust or where to get reliable information is a daunting task. There has not been a day in the last eighteen months when the virus or politics have not been talked about in our home. My kids are tired of it. I am tired of it. But… we need to be informed, right? We don’t need to become ostriches and stick our heads in the sand and ignore everything… no matter how appealing that may seem at times. Enter WORLD Watch!
We were given access to WORLD Watch News through the Homeschool Review Crew. We have received so many amazing products through the Review Crew, but I’m not going to lie- I think this might be my favorite one.
Monday through Friday, we receive a daily newscast via my email. It is a ten minute long video highlighting the news as well as other fun and interesting segments. In my opinion, they do a fantastic job of being unbaised and trustworthy. The news is presented in a way in which kids can understand. They do tackle hard things (like the Taliban), but do it in such a way that it isn’t scary and allows for healthy questions and conversations to be sparked. They are all about building “news literacy and Biblical discernment.” Every segment ends with this statement: “WHATEVER THE NEWS, THE PURPOSE OF THE LORD WILL STAND.” Such good truth to be reminded of when it seems like everything is falling apart. God is still in control. He is not caught off guard. His purpose will stand.
We usually cast the video up to the big TV in our living room so we can all sit and watch together. Because it is just ten minutes, we are easily able to make time…. usually just after breakfast before everyone goes their separate ways. I *think* WORLD Watch is designed with teens in mind, but my nine and twelve year olds have been watching and able to keep up with no problem.
Making real life connections and viewing things that are of interest to the kids has been a big deal. We watched a segment about electric scooters as transportation. We were able to talk about the pros and cons and pull from our own personal experience of seeing electric scooters all over the city in Nashville when we were there over the summer. We also watched about the history of the Berlin wall, what happens to Olympic venues once the Olympics are over, why we call letters “upper case” and “lower case” and so much more.
I wish mainstream media would take a lesson from WORLD Watch. I don’t want to be fed personal opinion and bias. I want to know what is happening in our world. I want to be able to see it clearly and form my own opinions. I want the fear removed and the talking heads to shush!
If you are looking for a healthy, Biblical way to engage the current culture with your children. To open conversation and teach your children to be critical thinkers- I would encourage you to look into WORLD Watch. I really don’t think you will regret it. I’ve learned a ton for myself and my kids feel better equipped to be in conversation with their peers and other adults. And… I’m pretty sure WORLD Watch is based near where we live in Western North Carolina. I’m thinking about reaching out and seeing if there might be a possibility for a field trip. My older two have been creating their own newscasts for years!
