Y’all. I barely made it out of Algebra. I never understood it. I asked for help, but I went to a rigorous college prep high school and I learned quickly that I had to just keep moving. I have never been one to speak up when I need help. I often just learn to cope with something until it is over… not a skill I want to pass on to my children. Algebra has been the cause of many, many tears and much heart ache and maybe some weeping and gnashing of teeth. So… you better believe I jump at every opportunity I get for help. When the book No-Nonsense Algebra from Math Essentials was offered to me, I said, “Yes Please!” I wanted the book more for me than anything else. I need to be able to teach my kids in the way they can learn, but to be able to help them, I need to be able to learn and understand as well!

I was super impressed with the thoroughness and clean lay out of No-Nonsense Algebra. As a graphic designer, I always notice things like font and how visually appealing and read-able something is. The pages in the book are clean and without distraction. They really are no-nonsense and get right to the point.

The book has ten chapters covering the following:

  1. Necessary Tools for Algebra
  2. Solving Equations
  3. Graphing and Analyzing Linear Equations
  4. Solving and Graphing Inequalities
  5. Systems of Linear Equations and Inequalities
  6. Polynomials
  7. Rational Expressions (Algebraic Fractions)
  8. Radical Expressions and Geometry
  9. Quadratic Equations
  10. Algebra Word Problems

In addition to those chapters, you can find the following:

  • A glossary
  • Important Formulas
  • Important Symbols
  • Multiplication Table
  • Commonly Used Prime Numbers
  • Squares and Square Roots
  • Fraction/Decimal Equivalents
  • A Link and Password to Access the Online Videos, which are available for every lesson.

Because I am not a great book learner, I was afraid the book on its own would not be enough for me to learn what I needed to help my children. O dear Lord… they are going to be living in my house when they are thirty because they are still trying to pass Algebra!!! I was thrilled to find out about the No-Nonsense Videos to go with No-Nonsense Algebra. Each chapter is broken into lessons. Each lesson has it’s own instructional video. I love the style of the videos. You can actually see the instructor working on a visual white board.

As if what I have shared with you isn’t enough, let me give you another reason to love No-Nonsense Algebra… Affordability! I have purchased not one, but two Algebra curriculum. I have a child finishing year two on Algebra and still not getting it. Things are starting to click, but we still have a long way to go. Save yourself the money and just go ahead and buy No-Nonsense Algebra. $35.95 gets you the book and access to the videos.

High School math can be a scary frontier for us non-mathers out there. Thankfully there are great resources available to help make the journey less frightning. You can do this. You can teach your child in highschool. You don’t have to stop just because the material gets difficult. (I am saying this just as much to myself as I am to you.)
