It has been a minute!
Life happened, my blog crashed… almost burned… but was revived by my tech-savvy brother. To say this past year has been tough is an understatement. But we made it… job loss, community shift, health problems for husband, house flood due to a burst pipe, health problems for this mama, health problems for daughter… y’all! Sometimes life just hits hard.
Regardless… things are back up and running and I have plans to be more consistent with blogging. One weekly feature will be the Top Ten Tuesday series!
I work with a co-op that serves 4th-12th grade. I am constantly scouring for activities, videos, lesson plans, etc. to reinforce whatever it is I am teaching on a certain week. Be sure to subscribe to the blog so you don’t miss out on tips and tricks to help your homeschool!
This past year, I had the privilege of teaching 4th and 5th grade science. We used the Berean Builders Science Through History as our base. We made it through Science in the Beginning and about halfway through the Ancient Times book.
Students… especially young students respond well to music. I looked for songs to help reinforce what we were learning. 4th and 5th grade can be tricky. Some kids think they are too cool to sing and dance along. Fortunately, I had my 10th grade daughter assisting my class. Once they realized she was singing and dancing along, most of the kids joined right in.
Videos can help reinforce concepts or introduce concepts as well. I find it a good idea to subscribe to a few channels on YouTube to help supplement my teaching.
Here are my top ten (in no particular) YouTube Channels for Elementary Science:
**Most of these are from a secular point of view. So… be aware that you might need to pre-screen or be ready to have conversations about creation, evolution, millions of years, etc.**
This station has tons of fun songs for learning. My kids and I looked through several songs when we were learning about the solar system. This is the channel we landed on and went back to several times.
Some of our favorite songs include:
This channel is fast-paced. They cover a variety of topics such as engineering, space science, physical science, earth science, and life science. I would say this one is more geared toward upper elementary.
3. SciShow Kids
Geared for younger elementary, but still very beneficial for olders. I tell my 4th and 5th graders to not be offended if a video I show them seems a little young. I tell them that sometimes hearing or seeing something meant for a younger age can actually reinforce a concept really well. I let them know that sometimes I read children’s books!
SciShow Kids has hundreds of videos covering a variety of topics!
Science videos for kids. You can check out their playlist to see their variety. They have some videos classified by specific grade level.
5. Go Noodle
Honestly… I don’t know that much about this one. I’m only listing it because one of our favorite songs to get up and move to is listed there.
I’m a fan of Dr. Binocs! This is another one that older kids might scoff at… but they will learn a ton! PeekABoo Kidz covers bunches of science topics including environmental science, the solar system, and planet Earth.
The King of Random channel shares videos dedicated to exploring life through all kinds of life hacks, experiments, and random weekend projects.
Tons of fun, kid-friendly experiments with great explanations and discussions.
“Welcome to Mystery Science! Our mission is to inspire children to love science and become lifelong learners. Our YouTube channel is packed with mini-lessons that will make you want to get up and explore the world around you. From the depths of the ocean to the vastness of space, we cover it all and more!”
Find out the answers to questions like “Can a turtle live outside its shell?” and “Where did metal come from?”
Love this station! Follow dad, Sergei, as he does fun experiments at home with his two little boys.
This station is great for when you don’t have the mental, physical, or emotional capacity to do an experiment!
“New videos all the time, FunScienceDemos brings engaging demonstrations in a range of Earth/Space Science, Physical Science, Life Science, Science Practices and Engineering topics right into your classroom or home. Join Dr George Mehler of Temple University & Jared Hottenstein of Central Bucks School District as we deliver over 10,000 science lessons a day around the world, with fully translatable captions. Our videos are adaptable to all grade levels, & are easy to explore & enjoy even with limited background or equipment. Science is so cool!”
There you have it! Ten YouTube Channels to help you when teaching elementary science!!!
Please note that I have not previewed every video on the sites listed above. I am sharing these as safe and kid-friendly to the best of my knowledge. Always go ahead and do your due diligence and make sure what your child is watching is in line with your family’s vision and values.
